Community Investment
NRA has a commitment to supporting voluntary groups that engage with environmental and social issues and our Directors and staff have been involved on an ongoing basis with a number of organisations. Recently we have been looking for a project to support in PNG and were told about 'Buk bilong Pikinini'. This is an exciting venture that addresses early learning as a key to literacy. In PNG there are few functioning libraries outside the school system and most children do not have access to books at all. 'Buk bilong Pikinini' provides community libraries - and staff to run them. This hands-on approach has an immediate and positive effect within the communities in which it is active.
NRA will be funding an assistant librarian position in 2012. We are also planning to organise a shipment of children's books. NRA's Bec McIntyre is co-ordinating the book delivery and if anyone is interested in helping collect children's books or puzzles please contact her on bec@natres.com.au.
The website is www.bukbilongpikinini.org. We hope other organisations will be inspired to support this or similar projects.
