Environmental Impact Monitoring

An unfortunate consequence of published guidelines is the inevitable use of ‘magic numbers’ in regulatory licences. NRA has engaged directly with officers of the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency as an advocate against this practice.  Rather we support the inclusion of licensed trigger values, the exceedance of which necessitates a management response.  The logic for this is that timely impact preventative or mitigative actions are far more desirable than restoration actions. NRA has demonstrated the efficacy of this approach through aquatic ecology monitoring programs. This service was developed in 1993/4 and has been refined over the past 15 years. It is in use at a number of sites in Central, North West and North Queensland.
