Thomas completed a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management with first class Honours. He conducted his honours research on mining restoration in Western Australia, and went on to complete a PhD in degraded ecosystems restoration exploring native vegetation restoration in post-agricultural, drought and post-fire ecosystems. During his studies, Thomas has developed skills in vegetation and restoration ecology, experimental design, data collection and management, statistical analysis using R programming, and scientific report writing.

Throughout his professional and academic work, Thomas has undertaken a variety of field work, such as:

  • botany: collecting herbarium samples, floristic surveys, vegetation community profiles, plant identification, vegetation abundance and richness, soil seedbank collection and analysis.
  • earth: soil sampling, microbial respiration and activity analysis.
  • zoology: camera trap monitoring, pitfall traps, harp traps, aquatic macro invertebrate sampling, acoustic and survey bird monitoring.
